Severe Flooding Strikes West Sumatra, Indonesia

Western Sumatra community are grieving. 


West Sumatra, were inundated folllowing heavy rain over the past few days.
Heavy rain caused the river Batang Bangko, Batang Suliti and Batang Lolo overflow, pouring water into Solok Selatan, Agam and Lima Puluh Kota.

Floods and landslides caused road Labuh Muara Padang Aro Kerinci were paralyzed.

Around 2000 homes were inundated. Flood waters reached up to 1.5 meters, and 100 hectares of rice fields are also flooded as high as 1 meter.

Runoff from the rain flooded dozens of roads and several affected pulic transportation.

In addition, the traffic lanes Payakumbuh - Pekan Baru is also paralyzed.

Floods and Landslides in West Sumatra, 6 People Buried

Head of Information and Public Relations of data centers National Disaster Mitigation Agency Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the rain that lasted continuously since 5 February resulted in floods and landslides hit several districts in West Sumatra.


Affected areas include Agam regency, South Solok, and Limapuluhkota. In South Solok, floods and landslides have occurred in three districts, namely  Pagu rivers, Pauh Duo, and Sangir. "The floods caused by the overflowing of  Batang Bangko 
rivers , Batang Suliti rivers , and Batang Lolo rivers," said Sutopo through a written statement on Monday, February 8, 2016.

Floods and landslides caused the road to Padang Aro Kerinci Muaralabuh were paralyzed.. Landslide which occurred on Saturday at 20:00 pm override homes and causing six people were lost.Of the six people who were buried, two of whom had been evacuated in the state died. While the other four are still in the search process.

Flooding also caused 2,000 houses were inundated with water up to a height of 1.5 meters. 100 hectares of rice fields are also flooded as high as 1 meter. Two bridges break, so traffic Payakumbuh Pekanbaru paralyzed. "Currently, the condition is still raining," said Sutopo.


The overflow of  Batang Lembang rivers also caused flooding in the village of Koto Panjang, District Cape of Good Hope, and Kampai Tabu Karambia village, Solok. A total of 36 homes were flooded. While in Agam district, a landslide occurred on Sunday at 02.00 pm.


According to Sutopo, landslide material 15 meters long by 2.5 meters high time to close the access road connecting Bukittinggi with Lubuk Sikaping. But this time the road has been able to pass a vehicle.


In addition, flooding occurred in Nagari Bases, Sub Bases Nagari, Limapuluh City. One hundred homes were flooded up to one meter. One person named Padri, 16 years old, reportedly swept away and found dead.


Currently, said Sutopo, BPBDs together military, police, Red Cross, Basarnas, SKPD, and the community has collected data and emergency handling. Some shelters set up to distribute ready-to-eat food. Showers are still in progress are recognized Sutopo complicate handling on site.
